One change this week, but a significant one: the assistant can now be switched into a mode where it hands every conversation straight to a live person instead of answering.

This isn’t a retreat from the automated path. It’s the escape hatch I should have built earlier. The last few weeks have been a steady run of the assistant getting a detail wrong in front of a customer — a schedule, an age rule, a price — and each time the only lever I had was to patch the specific case and redeploy. Now there’s a single switch that takes the machine out of the loop entirely while I fix whatever broke, and it can be flipped without shipping code.

Quieter week, two things worth writing down.

The blob pipeline now retries failures instead of leaving them parked. The hard part wasn’t the retry, it was bounding it: retries run against a capped budget and respect dependency order, so a document that failed because its parent hadn’t been processed yet gets picked up once the parent succeeds, and one genuinely broken file can’t burn the entire budget by itself.

Two threads this week: search and the review pass.

On search, I stopped writing for search. The style guide now says to name things precisely — the actual product, the actual rule, the actual number — rather than pad headlines with terms I hope someone types. The evergreen guides got re-angled to match what people are actually asking, and I fixed a structural mistake where reference material with no news date was being marked up as news articles.

The busiest week in a while, and most of it was about pulling judgement out of the model and into data.

Age eligibility was the clearest case: the assistant had been reasoning its way to whether a student qualified for a given course, and it was reasoning wrong. It now looks the answer up. In the same vein, I took a batch of rulings from the business side — how to handle private-lesson pricing, what the adult age boundaries actually are, and a workshop date that had gone stale — and encoded them rather than leaving them to interpretation.

A heavy week, mostly reliability.

Startup ordering was wrong: the server waited on pipeline recovery before it would answer anything, so a restart with a backlog looked like an outage. It now serves first and recovers behind that, with a real HEALTHCHECK so the container’s state is honest. Two more crashes went away — MCP sessions were expiring after five minutes, and a panicking worker could take the whole pipeline down with it. Cancelling or completing one trip could also strand its load in in_transit while a sibling trip was still open; that’s fixed, as is previewing text and markdown blobs in Fleet.

Launching a term is still more manual than I’d like: the same facts get typed into three or four places, and every one of them is a chance to get it wrong. That friction keeps showing up in these logs, and it’s becoming the thing I most want to fix.

Most of the week went into the Fleet web app’s list views. Pagination was only pretending to work — the trips list now does real limit/offset paging against the API instead of slicing whatever happened to already be loaded in the browser. Filters route properly now, so a filtered list is a URL you can share or reload. I also added one-click expense review so approving a straightforward receipt doesn’t require opening a detail page first. A caching fix rounds it out: fleet assets are revalidated on load, so browsers stop serving a stale bundle after a deploy.

A quieter week, mostly quality control.

The bulk of it went into the pre-publish review pass, which absorbed another dozen or so specific failure modes: Spanish renderings of time windows that inverted the meaning, corrections that drifted away from the date they were anchored to, third-party brands getting credited for work they didn’t do, and English idioms translated literally so that price-band language came out as nonsense in Spanish. I also fixed a stale-cache problem where checks against the live site during a merge were reading the previous version and passing when they shouldn’t have.

Course logistics drove most of this week. A new morning cohort opened for the beginner level, so I taught the assistant about it — and then a few days later had to correct it, because the schedule I’d given it was wrong on both the days it meets and its start date. That’s the second time bad schedule data has reached customers through the assistant, and it’s pushing me toward keeping course details in one place rather than duplicated into the assistant’s knowledge.

Expense tracking landed this week, and it is the largest thing Ollie has gained in a while. Drivers can submit receipts from the road, and those receipts run through the same document pipeline as every other file, so the back office gets something structured to review instead of a photo and a guess. Approval is no longer all-or-nothing — an expense can be partly approved, which matters when one stop bundles a reimbursable charge with something that isn’t. Expenses can also be attached to a maintenance record, so a repair’s cost lives with the repair rather than floating in a separate ledger.

The theme this week was making the site readable by machines and then checking whether they came. I shipped a set of AI-friendliness changes — a machine-readable index at the root, explicit links between language versions, and a plain-text view of the crawl graph — and followed it with reporting that separates the agent share of traffic from the human share at the edge. The effect is now measurable instead of assumed. I also nudged the story mix toward payment-rails coverage, where the engagement data supported it.

The biggest fix was language handling. The assistant had been deciding what language to answer in largely by inference inside the prompt, which drifted when a customer switched mid-thread. The existing tooling could turn one recorded playthrough into a narrated clip, which was useful but limited — a single run rarely shows the range of what the game actually does. So I extended it to work across several recordings at once, selecting and sequencing them into a themed montage rather than treating each session as its own isolated video.

Short week, one substantial piece of work: scanned documents.

Ollie stores every rate confirmation, BOL, and receipt as a blob and summarizes it so the contents are searchable and usable downstream. That worked well for born-digital PDFs and fell over on scans, which carry no extractable text layer — the summarizer had nothing to read and produced nothing worth keeping. Those now go through a vision model instead, so a photographed or faxed document gets summarized from what is actually on the page rather than from an empty extraction.

Most of this week went into making dispatch actually hold together from end to end. I put the project formally under its corporate owner — proper attribution and a real contact address rather than something ad hoc — and published a privacy policy reachable from the hub. Follow-through on last week’s assistant launch, turning a capable bot into a reliable one.

The biggest behavior change: the assistant now collects a visitor’s contact details up front and books the demo class itself, rather than escalating to a human as soon as things got specific. It also learned the children’s and teen programs, so it can actually advise a parent instead of deflecting, and it now persists a lead promptly and re-syncs cleanly when someone corrects a detail mid-conversation. Those were the rough edges that showed up once real people started using it.

Week two was about turning a single puzzle into a small product and making it shareable.

I added a landing hub at the root that presents the daily and practice options side by side, plus a launch splash for the installed app. The big gameplay addition was anonymous “world” stats: an aggregate view of how everyone did on the day’s puzzle, with copy that behaves sensibly when the sample size is still small. There’s also a new beginner-friendly mode with a gentler setup and more guesses, and practice is now available per variant.

This was week one — the build. It went from nothing to a daily puzzle you can actually play.

The core came first: the scoring logic, a game-mode registry with guess validation, date handling, and a generator that precomputes each day’s puzzle so everyone gets the same one. I added a guardrail that checks every generated puzzle is actually solvable within the allowed guesses before it ships, so a day can’t go out broken. A key design call: the hidden code stays on the server. Guesses are scored server-side and the client only ever sees closeness feedback, never the answer.

The biggest engineering week of the project. The goal was an AI chat assistant that does more than answer FAQs — one that can actually move a prospect toward enrolling.

I built the assistant on a small AI brain that, in a single turn, can answer from a curated knowledge base, check real class availability, book a demo class, or hand off to a human advisor. It collects the visitor’s name, email and phone before booking, splits availability into clean date options, resolves relative dates like “tomorrow” itself, and creates the booking and the lead record in the school’s CRM. It’s deliberately brief and WhatsApp-friendly, replies in the visitor’s language (English, Spanish or Chinese), and keeps each conversation’s state isolated so nothing leaks between chats. It’s verified, tested, and gracefully handles the awkward cases — no availability on a given day, an advisor who’s offline, a contact detail that needs correcting.

With the site live, this week was about sharpening the publishing machinery and holding a daily cadence.

The biggest piece of new tooling was a market-chart generator: a linear-scale engine that renders price charts as inline SVG so markets posts get a real, accurate chart instead of a stock image. I added guards so it won’t treat an in-progress candle as a settled close — small detail, but it’s the kind of thing that quietly produces wrong charts if you ignore it.

A feature-rich week, all aimed at turning visitors into qualified leads.

The centerpiece was a native placement exam. Instead of sending prospects to an external form, the site now has its own branded CEFR quiz that scores a visitor’s level against the school’s agreed thresholds, captures their details as a lead, and remembers the result so a returning visitor sees it again. It’s a far better experience than a generic Google Form, and the school owns every part of it.

This was the big build-out week — the site went from a design spec to a live, publishing blog.

I rebuilt PTYcoin on Hugo Extended with a bespoke plain-CSS theme: design tokens, a light/dark/system toggle, the brand logo as traced vectors, and a home page that leads with recent posts. The bilingual core is the part I cared most about getting right — every page has an English and Spanish side joined by a shared translation key, with hreflang, a language switcher, and a root redirect that sends readers to their language. On top of that came Pagefind search indexed in both languages, and an EN/ES pairing validator with tests so the catalog can never go half-translated.

The MCP server grew up this week.

I moved it onto rmcp’s StreamableHTTP transport and the 2025-06-18 protocol revision, then worked through the spec properly: tool annotations (read-only / destructive / idempotent) and titles, cursor pagination so list tools stop silently truncating at 100, structured tool output with output schemas, a Resources capability exposing blobs/loads/trips under ollie:// URIs, resource links in tool results, argument completions, and elicitation — so a tool can pause mid-call and ask the agent to confirm a destructive operation. Semantic blob search became its own tool.

This week was a dedicated performance push, driven by real page-speed scores. A marketing site lives or dies on first impression, and the homepage was loading heavier than it needed to.

The biggest win was the homepage hero. I resized and lazy-loaded the slideshow images so the page paints its main content faster instead of waiting on oversized art. From there I routed images across the site — homepage and every page hero — through a single responsive-image helper, so the browser downloads an appropriately sized version for each device rather than one huge file for everyone. I also deferred the third-party scripts (analytics, chat, tracking pixels) so they stop blocking the initial render.

This week filled in the dispatcher side.

Full CRUD for facilities, trucks and trailers landed on both the REST API and MCP, and trip lifecycle actions — assign, dispatch, arrive/depart, and the rest — got exposed on both surfaces, so an agent can run a trip end to end. I also added a set of data-integrity doctors: diagnose-and-repair tools for trip, load and facility data, plus clearer OpenRouteService diagnostics when mileage routing fails.

After standing the driver app up fast, this week was about making it feel like something a driver would actually want to use.

I broke the UI into proper components: an app-bar matching the design spec, a bottom nav (Trips / Pay / Account), mode-aware trip cards, a horizontal swipe helper, and a stop-detail arrival/departure editor. The Pay tab got a week stepper for navigating pay periods — pay weeks run on terminal-local time, so the date math has to respect timezone and Sunday boundaries rather than UTC. Passkey enrollment moved into the account page.

Most of it was on the pricing cards. I cleaned up the plan copy, added a flexible pack option, and moved the “recommended” badge to the right plan so the highlighted choice reads clearly. The card grid got attention too — wrapping at three per row with the final row centered so an odd number of plans still looks intentional rather than lopsided across screen sizes.

A productive week focused on two things: helping prospects take the next step, and pinning down the brand.

On conversion, I built a dedicated pricing page with reusable pricing and class-details sections, then surfaced those on the homepage too. I added online class booking through an embedded scheduler, wired into the homepage call to action and the contact page, so a visitor can go from interested to booked without leaving the site. I also added a focused link-in-bio landing page for social profiles — a single, fast page with the few actions that matter — fully translated across all three languages.

This week was about turning the site from a brochure into something that captures and tracks leads — and reaching a new audience.

I wired the inquiry forms into a real CRM-backed flow, including file uploads and language-matched auto-reply emails, plus country and city fields so the school knows where prospects are coming from. To support that I moved hosting onto Cloudflare and added build-version tracking so I can tell exactly which release is live. Analytics went in too — site analytics and a marketing tracking pixel — so the school can finally see what’s working.

The biggest week so far. The site had been running on placeholder copy and stock photography, and this was the push to make it feel like the actual school.

I did a full content audit and replaced stock imagery with real photos of the school — its classrooms, teachers and students. To keep that sane at scale I built a small media pipeline: gather the source images, normalize and convert them to web-friendly formats, and give each a content-addressed name so duplicates collapse and nothing gets re-processed. That fed a proper image library the whole site draws from. I also swapped invented testimonials for real reviews and trimmed courses that are no longer offered.

This was a more experimental week. I tried out a daily Social Intelligence Briefing format — a dated report pulling together threads like Iran’s Bitcoin activity, Chamath on solar, some machine-learning skews, and notes on agent virtue. I published a draft, iterated on readability with shorter paragraphs and tighter copy, and ultimately pulled the post back out. The format wasn’t earning its keep as a recurring thing, but it was worth running the experiment to find that out.
